How can I view .dmg files?

im downloading my movies onto my mac with disk utility. clicked new image to make the file or something like that. so i can see the movie file labeled with .dmg at the end but front row doesn't support that. how can i change this? so that it is another type of file. and please don't answer with technical stuff I don't even know what disk image means or mounting.
