What did I do to my thumb?

I have been carving a piece of wood. I am an artist but I have never carved before. I had a lot of detail on it and it was very intricate carving. While I was carving mt thumb started to hurt right at the knuckle. I kept going just thinking it was where I had never carved before and my thumb was getting sore. Well it has been a day or two and it hurts really bad! It hurts to put pressure on it or to move it. it is just a little bit swollen. The pain is concentrated in my knuckle but spreads up my pointer finger and down my wrist. I have no clue what I did or why it hurts so bad. Any suggestions?
