Allow incoming connections on Mac?

Yesterday, when downloading the .dmg for a video plugin (and not a risky one, it was for Dish Network's online service), I got a pop-up on my computer asking me if I wanted to allow incoming connections from Firefox.app (my browser) on my firewall. Why did this appear just now (after using Firefox on this computer for several months now), and is it advisable to allow it or block it?
