Borderlands: gun stats question?

When I am checking out a guns stats sometimes it will say the gun's dmg is 24 but then flashes 'x11'. Am I correct to assume that this means the gun does 24 x 11 or 264 dmg?? With that then it should mean that a gun with these stats is more powerful than a gun that says has a dmg stat of let's say 150 but has no multiplier flashing after it. Am I correct with this?
